The scope was for a contemporary kiwi-inspired batch with oak wood & NZ pine “look and feel”. Also to capture 180 degrees of Muriwai sea scape, the client invited to join the initial meeting while standing on top of the old Bach roof taking in the expansive views. Also a reference point for establishing upper floor levels. The brief was for a new home with rear site accessory building. The new accessory building site was designed to house 4 collectible Valiant Charger muscle cars, ranging from bright red, Vitamin C orange, & sky-blue.
The main house design was inspired from the clients previous home at Leigh, north of Auckland, that was a classic kiwi Bach family home with lots of wood and glazing to capture the nestled into tree-top feeling. The client is also an avid surfer which allows inspections of surf conditions.
The client brief was for a new workshop, to incorporate the clients desire to have a purpose-built space for tools, projects, storage and additional sleeping quarters, that was separate to their main home. It is a pole type construction with black steel/metal cladding set amongst the beautiful bush setting of Oratia. The black facade and form are striking against the array of green, created by the Waitakere Ranges that surround the site.
The client scope was Frank Lloyd Wright inspired extension to their family home. That was to capture long low-roof forms, large eaves and nestled into the site context. The extension accommodated their family needs, to accommodate their coming of age kids, space and freedom. Also there was interest to remove main vehicle parking to a side lane which formalises the pedestrian entry between the stone fences and bush setting. Private courtyards were created nestled in behind the bustling streetscape.
The client scope was for a small, quirky extension to accommodate family living and kitchen zone and integrate well into the original Bach without complication or confusion; also to capture as much sun through the Titirangi tree-scape. As the original Bach roof was is in disarray and no budget for re-roofing & levelling, the new extension incorporated a long wall across the front to block view of the old Bach roof. Parapet heights were calculated from standing from the road-frontage. The popped up, steel framed roof was to capture full sun whilst allowing uninterrupted views to the local bush setting from footpath onlookers.
The client was inspired by the neighbour’s house which was designed by Architecture27 ltd. There was inspiration for modernistic square box forms, clean lines and integration into an existing home. The modern box form juxtaposes the single level family home with entry and stairwell between.
The client’s scope was to formalise a single-bay villa into a grand double-bay villa with wrap around decks and colonial fretwork. Along with the English cottage classic rose ceiling décor and paneling, a new dig-out garage for 4 vehicles and gym, a new self-contained unit for kids plus a cloister connection to the house to accommodate the seasonal uses off the main courtyard. There was care to capture the colonial fretwork, verandah teardrop bracketry and roof finials which was in keeping to the English cottage era.
